Sabine Pierick: SEASONAL HAPPINESS ·Title: Winter · Dimensions: 150 x 150 cm · Material: Real copper disc on various granulated hard coal · Year: 2023 Description: The viewer traverses the earth's disks, full of nature, in an almost physical manner: one follows amorphous tracks, explores landscapes that seem vegetal, invents one's own paths and thus broadens one's mind. Imagination of the senses: the Mars-red-dark summer disk heralds scorching heat, vaguely cloaked eruption density, the winter disk lets the sleet hiss harshly past the ear, the spring island beckons with cosmic budding awakening, the autumn cycle self-confidently and blatantly jams itself against its own forces. What the four different temperaments have in common is their support in the framing coal black. The crystalline primordial black knows how to hold the treasure from which it was born. Back

Sabine Pierick: 915 · Title: Big Player · Dimensions: 150 x 150 cm · Material: Real copper on various granulated coal · Year: 2015 Description: In the innovative combination of industrial material and traditional drawing tools, Pierick consistently develops material-based abstraction further. Through precise execution and the well-considered choice of materials, she succeeds in creating a contemporary visual language that combines the constructivist heritage with its own material presence, creating a contemplative image space of impressive intensity. The center is dominated by a deep black circle created with charcoal, surrounded by a glowing ring of real copper. This concentric arrangement takes up the formal language of concrete art and, similar to Barnett Newman's "zips", creates a contemplative image effect. The material contrast between velvety charcoal and metallic copper shine is reminiscent of the material presence of Arte Povera. The technical execution of the transition area shows a mastery of materials in the tradition of Richard Serra, while the organic structure shows parallels to Max Bill's cosmic circular forms. The artist thus demonstrates her special feeling for the effect of materials and their potential for creating contemplative pictorial spaces. Back

Sabine Pierick: Pure Varity · Title: Pue Varity 1 · Dimensions: 150 x 150 cm · Material: Copper sheet, oxidized, on variously granulated coal Year: 2023 Description: Sabine Pierick's series "Sortenrein" features a series of abstract representations as a central motif. The title "Sortenrein" refers to Pierick's approach, in which she focuses on the use of pure, unmixed materials such as coal and copper. Formally, the works in this series are characterized by a reduced, minimalist imagery that relies heavily on the contrast between the dark background and the golden panes. However, Pierick uses various surface structures and patterns to create a range of moods and associations. The first picture, with its finely structured, almost glittering surface, evokes a meditative, spiritual character. Back

Sabine Pierick: 1723 · Title: · Dimensions: 150 x 150 cm · Material: Real copper on various granulated coal · Year: 2015 Description: In this work, a distinctly different material elaboration manifests on the circular copper surface. The oxidation processes are more dominant here, generating a richer spectrum of green and blue tones that merge with the copper-colored areas to create a complex surface structure. Particularly striking are the linear structures that run through the composition like fissures or deliberately placed lines. These are reminiscent of the graphic elements found in works of Art Informel, such as those by Emil Schumacher or Karl Fred Dahmen. The traces of artistic manipulation are more clearly recognizable here as design elements. The structure resembles a patina and develops a distinctive depth effect in this work, reminiscent of the material experiments of Arte Povera. In contrast to work 1323, the use of coal recedes more into the background, while the chemical processes of oxidation take on a leading role in the design. The distribution of color zones appears less cartographic and instead more dynamic, almost gestural in its composition. This creates an interesting connection to the tradition of process art, where the artistic process itself becomes an essential design element. The combination of controlled interventions and chemical reactions of the material shows parallels to the material experiments of Alberto Burri, though presented here in a contemporary, technically precise execution. The tension between the geometric basic form of the circle and the free, process-based surface design remains as a fundamental design principle. Back

Sabine Pierick: Pure Varity / Sortenrein · Title: Sortenrein 2 · Dimensions: 150 x 150 cm · Material: Copper sheet, oxidized, on variously granulated coal Year: 2023 Description: The second image, with its detailed floral patterns, adds an organic, natural quality. This, in turn, with its dynamic, abstract pattern, gives an energetic, almost fiery vibe. The title "Sortenrein" refers to the fact that Pierick only uses pure materials such as coal and copper in this series. This creates a special materiality and texture in her works that invites the viewer to look closely at the surfaces and explore their sensual qualities. Back

Sabine Pierick: 1117 / 1215 / 416 / 516 / 316 / 216 / 1216 / 1215-2 / 616 / 817 ·Title: Compounds · Dimensions: 120 x 150 cm and 2x120 cm x 150 cm · Material: Real copper on various granulated coal, petrol Year: 2016 - 2017 Description: This series of material images is characterized by its graphic formal language. The works demonstrate a connection between geometric abstraction and the expressive power of the materials they have chosen. The flowing, natural forms reflect the energy of non-linear dynamics. The compositions draw on the symbolic meaning of the square and circle as elemental forms and relate to other prominent artists of the 20th century who explored the expressive power of unconventional materials. Pierick's use of granulated charcoal, copper and petroleum draws parallels with the "Art Informel" movement, with artists such as Hans Hartung and Georges Mathieu embracing the spontaneous, gestural qualities of unorthodox media. The strict geometry of the works is broken up and emotionalized by the expressive materiality, giving them a unique haptic quality. The symbolism of square and circle, as elementary geometric shapes, structures the works and expresses references to the tradition of concretism. Overall, Pierick's oeuvre positions itself at the interface between abstraction and materiality, which gives it an important position in modern art. Her distinctive style combines the discipline of geometry with the raw power of natural resources to create a conceptually complex body of work. Back

Sabine Pierick: 624 · Title: Sentimental Journey · Dimensions: 130 x 180 cm · Material: Real copper on various granulated coal, petrol · Year: 2024 Description: From a formal perspective, the work features a sophisticated arrangement of shapes, colors and textures that result in an exciting and harmonious overall composition. The use of unusual materials such as pieces of coal and real copper in combination with petrol gives the image a special tactile quality and depth. The expressive coloring, the dynamic composition and the emotional, almost spiritual character of the picture are reminiscent of Abstract Expressionism, an influential art movement of modernism. Artists such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning created similarly energetic compositions that transferred the artist's feelings and emotions directly onto the canvas. Pierick's work also shows similarities to Tachism, a variant of Art Informel that is characterized by spontaneous, random applications of color. The focus here is on materiality and texture. Overall, "Sentimental Journey" can be classified in a number of different modern and contemporary art movements, all of which are characterized by a direct, emotional expression. Pierick creates a fascinating synthesis of various painting traditions into a very personal, atmospheric work. Back

Sabine Pierick: 418 · Title: World Cry · Dimensions: 160 x 210 cm · Material: Real copper on various granulated coal · Year: 2021 Description: The material tension between the industrial, fossil material of coal and the noble, reflective copper creates a complex symbolism: while coal stands for the earthbound, the transient and the burden of the industrial past, copper conveys a transcendent, almost spiritual quality through its warm shine and its cultural-historical significance as one of the first metals processed by humans. The composition is masterful in its reduction: the large black form dominates the upper part of the picture and seems to rise up against the copper sky or disappear into it. This tension between presence and dissolution, between material heaviness and ethereal lightness, gives the work its special dynamic power. In a contemporary context, the work can also be interpreted as a reflection on ecological crises and the "cry" of nature. The use of coal, a symbol of industrialization and climate change, in conjunction with the title "World Cry" opens up a critical dimension that goes beyond the purely aesthetic effect. Pierick's work is thus in the tradition of material and process art, but through its specific choice of materials and compositional power it develops its own contemporary position that combines ecological, cultural-historical and existential questions in an impressive formal synthesis.
